Northern Singapore to See Boosted Health Services as Chronic Disease Rates Rise

Singapore is expanding health infrastructure in its northern region in response to an uptick in chronic illnesses, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced. The move aims to bring essential care closer to residents and ease pressure on hospitals in central areas.

What’s being done

  • The number of Community Health Posts in the region will increase from 34 to 39, giving more neighbourhood touchpoints for regular health services.
  • These posts will also see more consistent operations: currently some are open only weekly or fortnightly; over time, the goal is for all of them to open at least once every week.

The health challenge

  • Northern Singapore has higher-than-average rates of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
  • The Health Promotion Board will step up community programmes — such as resistance-band workouts and dance fitness — to encourage physical activity in the area, particularly among men, who are statistically less likely to participate.
